We are pleased to announce, that the Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities has provided funding for Aboriginal Camp 2011. The camp will take place Wednesday May 25th to Friday May 27th.
In June 2010
with funding assistance from the Ministry of Aboriginal Affairs, we launched our 2nd Annual CAMP CHOICE – Aboriginal Camp and hosted over 130 grade 7/8 Aboriginal students and their chaperones. Again, the program garnered impressive reviews.
Background
In May 2009, part of the First Generation funding proposal released by the Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities (MTCU), we piloted the first ever CAMP CHOICE – Aboriginal Camp with 85 grade 7/8 Aboriginal students from 6 First Nation communities from south central Ontario. This very special camp was modeled after our successful 3-Day Education Camp which attracts hundreds of grade 6-8 students each May and June from elementary schools from all over Ontario. Its main purpose is to give younger students a “complete college experience” so they can make more informed choices about their futures.
What made this Aboriginal camp really special was that Aboriginal students from many different geographical regions were able to spend 3 days together, celebrating their culture while participating in all the educational and social aspects of the program.
In addition to the regular components of 2 nights accommodation in our Student Residence, a full meal plan, and participation in hands-on workshops that showcased technology, health science, business and media arts, students also participated in fun workshops and activities that embraced Aboriginal culture. Our Elder and other Aboriginal leaders were active in leading cultural workshops and proving student guidance and support. Our Camp Counsellors (senior college students) also stayed with the students 24hrs to teach, mentor and guide them through their college experience.
Overall, the program exceeded all our expectations. (see video clip)
